ORCHESTRAL & STAGE MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM

As part of our Penrith Youth Orchestra (PYO) initiative, this training program is an internship/volunteer opportunity designed for aspiring arts and stage managers. The program focuses on providing hands-on experience and industry training through a series of Sunday workshops, held across three consecutive Sundays each school term. These workshops culminate in four performances throughout the year. The program kicks off with an intensive academy weekend in March, in partnership with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (Friday–Sunday), offering participants the chance to learn from leading professionals in the field.

Available Training Positions:

Event Support Assistant (Up to 4 positions)
Assist with setup and pack-up, message running, student oversight, and ensuring the smooth running of the day.

    • Administrative support
    • Engaging with artists and conductors
    • Building rehearsal and performance schedules
    • Venue liaison and bookings
    • Overseeing orchestra setup and pack-up
    • Managing music hire, preparation, and distribution
    • Coordinating orchestra seating and plans
    • Assisting with lighting, sound, and staging for rehearsals and performances

Orchestral Management Support (Up to 2 positions)
This internship provides hands-on industry experience for those interested in pursuing arts or music management at the tertiary level. You will learn the behind-the-scenes operations of an orchestra, gaining practical skills in project management and stage management. This position requires a higher level of commitment and is ideal for those with an understanding of music and an interest in arts management.

Key Tasks:

Participants will be required for a six-week period each term. Preference will be given to those who can volunteer during the Academy Weekend in Term 1 for operational context.

Time Commitment:
Between 10 and 20 hours per term, combining pre- and post-event administrative work with hands-on involvement during rehearsals and performances. A minimum commitment of one term is required, with preference for those available for the full year.

A small honorarium to cover expenses is available.

Location:
All PYO activities take place at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith. Some tasks may be performed remotely, as arranged with Conservatorium staff.

Training Program Requirements:

  • Working with Children Check clearance (where applicable)
  • Willingness to comply with PP&VA’s Covid Safety Plan
  • Ability to take direction and attend an induction session prior to the first shift
  • First Aid Certificate (preferred but not essential)

Eligibility:

  • Age 16–28 (as of 1 January 2025)
  • Able to commit to at least one term (preference for those committing to the full year)
  • Availability during the PYO rehearsal and performance
